Lars Ulrich is a heavy metal God with his own jumbo jet. Tom Spicer lives in a care home in Devon and has Fragile X Syndrome, the most common known cause of inherited learning disabilities, which can lead to social, language, emotional, and behavioural problems. The film follows Tom’s brother and sister - Will, a filmmaker and Kate, a journalist, as they set themselves the mission to arrange a meeting between Tom and his hero Lars from Metallica. The journey brings unexpected challenges and surprises as they learn how to cope with Tom’s disabilities and the changing family dynamics.
Followed by panel discussion with Kate Spicer (Tom’s sister), Angela Hassiotis (Reader in Psychiatry of Learning Disabilities, UCL). Chaired by Clover Stroud (journalist & writer).
